PSSA presents Mark Smith: Running for Congress

Vice Chancellor Smith ran for Congress in 1994 and has worked on a number of political races.  Despite raising about a quarter of a million dollars, receiving the endorsements of governmental and political leaders, and receiving the endorsement of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Mark lost his bid for congress. He will talk about how to get involved, what you need to be doing now for a later run, and what to expect in a race.
Free Snacks, Drinks, and Pizza will be provided.

Externship Opportunities in ORAM – Organization for Refuge, Asylum and Migration

I am writing on behalf of ORAM—Organization for Refuge, Asylum 
and Migration.  ORAM is the leading NGO providing advocacy, 
representation and community education on refugees escaping 
persecution based on their sexual orientation, sexual identity or gender.

ORAM is looking for externs for the spring 2011 semester (also for the 
winter break) for multiple projects involving research and writing, and 
on issues pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex 
asylum seekers and refugees. I am attaching more information about 
our externship opportunities. I’m very excited about the prospects of 
reaching out to your students. Please let me know what we can do to take 
this initiative further.

SIR Journal of International Relations Soliciting Undergrad Submissions

The Sigma Iota Rho (SIR) Journal of International Relations is
soliciting submissions from undergraduate students for the 2011
edition of the Journal that will be printed and distributed in
April 2011.

  • The Journal aims to publish manuscripts relevant to the theory and practice of international relations including articles covering economics, political science, history, area studies, and current events.
  • Authors must be current undergraduate students, and all work must be original.
  • Papers must be between 2,000 and 6,000 words in length.
  • Manuscripts must be submitted as Microsoft Word documents (.doc format) that are double-spaced and typed in 12 point Times New Roman with proper citations and 1 inch margins.
  • Articles must include a title, a 200-word maximum length abstract, and a brief biography, indicating whether or not the author is a member of Sigma Iota Rho (all of which must appear in the Word document).
  • Include the following personal information on the front cover page: name, email, telephone number, affiliated institution.
  • Submissions with charts, graphs, or other pertinent illustrations are acceptable.

Submissions for the 2011 Edition of the Journal
are due on or before January 17th, 2011.

International Leadership Program’s Water Privatization Awareness Events

Each year, students in the International Leadership Program (ILP) create their own internationally-focused events on Washington University’s campus to raise awareness about a complex international issue.

This year, ILP members created a series of events focused on water privatization.

  • Tuesday, November 9: Speaker Karen Piper, Is Water the New Oil? Globalization and Water Privatization McMillan 214 4:30-5:30 [Karen Piper, with a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature (University of Oregon, 1996), always pursues interdisciplinary projects focusing on resource scarcity and distribution. She received the Sierra Nature Writing Award, a National Endowment of the Humanities grant, and a Huntington fellowship.]

Political Science photo contest!

Political Science Majors Studying Abroad,

The Political Science Department is hosting a photography contest for students who have studied abroad (Spring, Summer or Fall 2010). The winning photo(s) will be displayed in the department. Last year’s winners are still on display so check them out.

The photos should capture the people, places and cultures you have visited. Photos that are political in content are encouraged but not required. For ideas and tips about taking and editing artistic photos, peruse National Geographic’s Photo Contest website, http://www.nationalgeographic.com/energizer/. Students should submit no more than 2 photos each (.jpeg format) to Professor Dawn Brancati (brancati@wustl.edu) by December 1 to enter the contest. Please write “PS Photo Contest” in the subject line of your email.
