Bain & Co. Recruiting in Political Science

Seniors,
Are you interested in a challenging job after graduation where you get to flex the analytical muscles you’ve been building at school? Do you have an interest in helping to shape the future of businesses ranging from midsize to multinational corporations?
My name is Greg Mervine and I am a recent WashU grad now working for Bain & Company, a top tier strategic management consulting firm.

Bain is looking for the best talent at Washington University to interview for Bain’s 2010 Associate Consultant class.  We are seeking students who have exceptional scholastic records, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and active, diverse interests.  We do not require a business background and business course work is definitely not a prerequisite to succeed at Bain.  Instead, we look to hire smart, well-rounded people from a variety of backgrounds, and historically, a majority of new AC’s have come to Bain with non-business educations.  We provide nationally renowned global training to all new hires in order to provide them with the necessary tools to succeed at Bain.  Additionally, we offer the possibility of MBA sponsorship after a few years with the firm.

Associate Consultants are integral members of case teams that work with international corporations to improve bottom line results and to achieve significant increases in the market values of their companies.  Case teams work on intense, strategic problems that range from acquisition studies, to manufacturing cost reduction efforts, to market strategy studies for new products. Through a broad range of experiences, the Associate Consultant position offers individuals the opportunity to develop superior analytic skills and sound business sense along with agreat career trajectory.  Associate Consultants use data driven analysis and direct client contact to promote change and add value.

As with other strategic management consulting firms, the interviews will primarily be in the case format.  Case interviews are typically based on a business situation/problem and interviewees are evaluated on the way in which they approach finding a solution to the problem.

We invite you to learn more about Bain at our upcoming events at Wash U:

  • Thursday Sept. 23rd, 6-7:30 pm: Company Presentation in the Knight Center, room 220
  • Thursday Sept. 23rd, 7:30-8:30 pm: Ace the Case Interview Workshop in the Knight Center, room 220
  • Friday Sept. 24th, NSBE Career Fair
  • Seniors – Resume deadline is Sunday, September 26th by 11:59 pm on both www.joinbain.com and CareerLink

If you have any questions about management consulting, Bain & Company, the Associate Consultant program feel free to contact me.

MoPIRG Internships

Internships with MoPIRG (Missouri Student Public Interest Research Group)

MoPIRG is a statewide, student-directed and student-funded organization
that gives students a vehicle to address real problems in their
communities.

Combining professional staff with the resources of college campuses,
MoPIRG provides students the opportunity to take education out of the
classroom, learn important skills, and make a direct impact on public
interest issues.

Whether crafting public policy that brings renewable energy technology
from the laboratory to the market or ensuring that ground-breaking academic
research reaches the public and policy-makers, MoPIRG projects have helped
college students serve their communities for the past 35 years.

We are currently working on the New Voters Project – a non-partisan
campaign to register and turn out over 1000 student-voters at Washington
University.  We are working within a coalition that includes the Brown
School Student Coordinating Council, College Democrats, College
Libertarians, Gephardt Institute for Public Service, Green Action, and the
Political Review.

MoPIRG interns are overseen by a faculty sponsor and a professional
organizer.  A typical internship covers a wide range of topics, including
campaign strategy, event planning, public relations, volunteer management
and current events.

We have plenty of opportunities, but here are a couple examples:

Organizing Interns:  coordinate a campaign on campus or in the community –
a process that includes building coalitions, recruiting volunteers,
coordinating events and developing campaign strategies

Media Interns:  develop persuasive messages, organize press conferences
and reach out to campus and community media outlets to educate the public
about critical issues

If you are interested in an internship opportunity, please sign up at
www.mopirgstudents.org/internships or email Jarod Gregory, the MoPIRG field
organizer, at jarod@mopirgstudents.org.

Green Corps Job Opportunity

Job Opportunity

Green Corps 2011-2012 Field School for Environmental Organizing

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day.

In Green Corps’ year-long paid program, you’ll get intensive training in the skills you’ll need to make a difference in the world. You’ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — global warming, deforestation, water pollution and many others — with groups such as Sierra Club and Greenpeace. And, when you graduate from Green Corps, we’ll help you find a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups.

For more information, read below or visit our web site: www.greencorps.org.

In your year with Green Corps:

You’ll get great training with some of the most experienced organizers in the field: Green Corps organizers take part in trainings with leading figures in the environmental and social change movements: people such as Adam Ruben, political director of MoveOn.org, and Bill McKibben, author and organizer of the “Step It Up” rallies for climate action.

You’ll get amazing experience working on environmental issues across the country: Green Corps sends organizers to jumpstart campaigns for groups such as Rainforest Action Network, Sierra Club, Greenpeace and Environment America in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and dozens of other places in between.

You’ll have a real impact on some of the biggest environmental problems we’re facing today: Green Corps organizers have built the campaigns that helped keep the Arctic safe from drilling, that led to new laws that support clean, renewable energy, that convinced major corporations to stop dumping in our oceans andmuch, much more.

You’ll even get paid: Green Corps Organizers earn a salary of $23,750. Organizers also have a chance to opt into our health care program with a pre-tax monthly salary deferral. We offer paid sick days and holidays, two weeks paid vacation and a student loan repayment program for those who qualify.

And when you graduate from the program, you’ll be ready for what comes next: Green Corps will help connect you to environmental and progressive groups that are looking for full-time staff to build their organizations and help them create social change and protect our environment.

In the next few months, we‘ll invite 35 college graduates to join Green Corps in 2011-2012. We’re looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, people who have taken initiative on their campus or community, and people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and work for change over the long haul.

If you think you’re one of those people, visit http://www.greencorps.org/apply to submit your application to join the 2011-2012 class of Green Corps’ Field School for Environmental Organizing.

Green Corps’ year-long program begins in August 2011 with Introductory Classroom Training in Boston, and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

2011 ICPSR and RCMD Research Paper Competitions

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research and the Research Center for Minority Data are pleased to announce our 2011 Research Paper Competitions. This year, ICPSR and RCMD are holding three competitions – two for undergraduates and one for master’s students.

The purpose of these competitions is to highlight student research papers using RCMD or ICPSR data. Entries to the either undergraduates or master’s competition could be papers written for a capstone course, a senior seminar, or any writing intensive course for which the student uses quantitative data analysis to support or refute a hypothesis. A master’s thesis could be appropriate provided that the terms above are met.

One of the undergraduate competitions is for papers using data in the RCMD archive; the other can use dataset(s) from any ICPSR archive. The master’s competition can use data from any ICPSR archive.

Competitions awards are $1,000 for first place and $750 for second place. The deadline for submission is January 31, 2011. For more information, submission guidelines, and promotional posters, please visit the competition Web site <http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR/prize/index.jsp> .
