NPR Internships for DC Program students

NPR is looking for interns!  We are interested in students who want to gain experience in marketing research or in the media industry.  We’re looking for someone with strong math, writing and communication skills.   We’re looking for self-starters who own the responsibility of their projects.   In other words, we treat you like an employee, not an intern.  A brief description about the internship is provided below, or you can click the blue link if you want to learn about other internship opportunities at NPR.

Audience Insight and Research Internship: (Typically offered all three semesters)
Interested in first-hand exposure to media research and strategy?  Consider an internship with our team, which acts as an internal research consultant to all NPR departments.  Interns work closely with staff from across the organization to bring audience insights into the center of decision making.  Tasks include analyzing listener habits and demographics, working with surveys, answering research requests from employees, and becoming familiar with databases like Arbitron and Nielsen.  A keen ability to synthesize and present information (written and graphic) is important.  Experience with survey work and research is a plus.

Other details:
·         This internship is based in Washington, DC
·         The Fall 2011 internship starts September 12, 2011 and ends December 23, 2011
·         This is a paid internship ($10 per hour)
·         We offer both part-time and full-time internships.  We are looking for interns who can commit at least 15 hours a week.

Please contact Meredith Heard at mheard@npr.org with a copy of your resume and cover letter explaining why you think you’re a good fit for this internship.   If you are interested in the Fall 2011 internship, please be sure to send a cover letter and resume by August 5.  Otherwise, NPR’s research team accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the year.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Meredith Heard

Stanford U.S. – Russia Forum Program Applications Open

Interested in Russia? Foreign Policy? Business? Want to go to Moscow?
Join The Stanford US Russia Forum!

The Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum (SURF) is a student-run program that connects top-notch American students with their Russian counterparts in an effort to build international dialogue.  Delegates for the program travel to Moscow for a five-day conference in the fall, work on a collaborative research project to produce a policy proposal in the winter, and present their work at a capstone conference at Stanford in the spring. Research this past year ran the gamut from venture capitalism in Russia to cybersecurity to new media uses by government officials and much more.

The program is open to both undergraduates and graduates from any university in the United States and seven partner universities across Russia.  Although background in Russian language or study does strengthen an application, we have no prerequisites for the program and we recruit delegates from all fields of study.

For more info check out www.joinsurf.com or email  at stanford.surf@gmail.com. Applications are due on May 29th.

Project Vote Smart Internships

Project Vote Smart is still hiring interns for the summer of 2011. This year we are working on expanding a visualization program started in 2010 to make our data more interactive. The 2010 version of our Vote Easy can be found here http://www.votesmart.org/voteeasy/. We also expect to continue to implement a K-12 program to bring Vote Smart into the classroom and encourage civics education. We need interns to help us update and maintain our Voter Self Defense System, which allows citizens to instantly access factual information on any candidate and discover that tolerance of today's political scene is no longer their only option.

We are seeking interns to work in our Research, Key Votes, Information Technology, and Membership divisions. Interns gain hands on political experience, while working and living in our wilderness retreat nestled high in the Montana Rockies. Our location in Southwestern Montana offers numerous outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, skiing, camping, fishing, swimming, and much more.

Visit the internship page of our website - http://www.votesmart.org/program_internships.php for more information about interning at Project Vote Smart.

Please don't hesitate to contact us at intern@votesmart.org or 1-888-868-3762.

Best wishes,

Darren McDivitt

Documentary Screening – “Waste Land” – 4/14

Free food and refreshments will be provided.

“Filmed over nearly three years, Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as theyrecreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives.”
